Salt Rock
Salt Rock is a small town on the north coast of KwaZulu Natal, just north of Ballito. It is the perfect holiday destination for families. As well as the extensive beach area that stretches from Salt Rock, through Shaka’s Rock to Ballito, there is a variety of local restaurants and shops, beautiful off-shore reefs for snorkelling and diving and lots of attractions to keep the children amused when they’re not on the beach. There are numerous golf courses nearby, including Zimbali Country Club and Umhlali Country Club.
Salt Rock is rich in Zulu history and there are many cultural sites in the area. Salt Rock’s name derives from the salt trade which sprang up between King Shaka and the early settlers. Dried salt that accumulated on the beaches would be gathered by the king’s servants who would trade it with the early settlers.
